Tooth Extractions

While our goal is always to preserve your natural teeth whenever possible, there are times when removing a tooth is the healthiest option for your smile. A tooth extraction can relieve pain, eliminate infection, prevent future dental problems, and protect the surrounding teeth and gums.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Needed?

We may recommend an extraction when a tooth is severely damaged or decayed and cannot be predictably restored with a filling, crown, or root canal. Extractions may also be necessary for teeth with significant infections, advanced gum disease, fractures below the gumline, or other conditions that make saving the tooth difficult.

In some cases, teeth may need to be removed because there is not enough room in the mouth, as part of orthodontic treatment, or because a wisdom tooth is impacted or causing problems for nearby teeth.

Before recommending an extraction, we carefully examine your tooth and review any necessary X-rays. We will discuss your options with you and recommend removal only when we believe it is appropriate for your oral health.

What Happens During a Tooth Extraction?

The procedure begins by thoroughly numbing the tooth and surrounding area with local anesthesia. Once you are comfortable and the area is numb, the dentist gently loosens the tooth and carefully removes it from its socket.

Some teeth can be removed with a straightforward extraction. Teeth that are broken, impacted, or positioned beneath the gums may require a surgical extraction. In these situations, a small opening may be made in the gum, and the tooth may be divided into smaller sections so it can be removed as gently as possible.

After the tooth has been removed, we clean the area and take any additional steps needed to support proper healing. Depending on the extraction, stitches may occasionally be placed.

Keeping You Comfortable

We understand that the idea of having a tooth removed can make some patients nervous. Your comfort is an important part of your care, and we take time to explain what will happen before we begin.

Local anesthesia is used to thoroughly numb the treatment area so you should not feel sharp pain during the extraction, although you may notice pressure or movement. We check that you are adequately numb before proceeding and encourage you to tell us at any point if you are uncomfortable.

We also work at a comfortable pace, explain each step as much—or as little—as you prefer, and give you opportunities to pause when needed. Depending on your individual needs and the options available at our practice, additional methods for managing dental anxiety may also be discussed before treatment.

After Your Extraction

Before you leave, we provide clear instructions for caring for the extraction site at home. Some tenderness and swelling can be normal during the first few days, and we will explain what to expect and how to manage discomfort while the area heals.

We will also discuss whether the missing tooth should be replaced. Depending on its location and your individual needs, options may include a dental implant, bridge, or removable appliance.

From your initial examination through your recovery, our goal is to make your tooth extraction safe, gentle, comfortable, and as stress-free as possible while helping you return to a healthy, pain-free smile.
